Introduction of Variable Frequency Drives

VFD acronym for Variable Frequency Drive

also called VVVF (variable-voltage/variable-frequency) drives, AFD (adjustable-frequency drives), and VSD (variable speed drives). VFD is a motor controller that changes the supply's voltage and frequency to modify the motor's speed. They are often referred to as speed controllers because the resultant output is the modification of the speed of motor. VFDs are utilized in different applications, from domestic to industrial, mainly to change motor speed whilst saving energy and improving effectiveness. Using VFDs guards the motors from extreme automatic stress, thus enlarging their serviceable life. VFDs comes in different power, voltage, and current rating options to match various electric motors.

Since the main aim of a VFD is exact SPEED CONTROL so that motor speeds can be high and low and the linked load can be managed at the required speeds that uses the required energy only. Darwin Motion VFD and Servo Drive manufacturer is sharing the benefits of installing a VFD.

Benefits of Variable Frequency Drives

Benefits of Installing VFD are
  • Controlled Initial CurrentWhen starting an AC motor across the line, there is seven-to-eight times the motor full-load current required to run the motor and load. This current bends the motor windings and produces more heat, that decreases the motor’s longevity. VFD reduces this problem as it starts a motor at zero frequency and voltage.
  • Decrease Power Line DisturbancesSensors, computers, proximity switches, & contactors are usually voltage sensitive. Using VFD cuts down the voltage sag, as the motor begins at zero voltage and ramped up.
  • Lower Power Required on StartWhen industrial consumers start their motors during the electrical consumption peak hour, it is very common to be stung with surge charges. Using the VFD eliminate the issue and provide better efficiency.
  • Energy SavingsVariable torque loads like Centrifugal fans and pump loads run via a VFD lower energy consumption. Centrifugal fans and pumps track an adjustable torque load that has horsepower relative to the cube of speed and torque changing proportional to the speed square, often called the “Affinity Laws”.
  • Reverse OperationUsing a Variable Frequency Drive cuts down the requirement for a reversing starters. Variable Frequency Drives permits electronic facility reversing either by incorporated reversing or an exterior switch included to the VFD terminal control board. The reversing starter cuts down its maintenance cost and panel space.
  • Controlled Acceleration A VFD runs at zero speed and accelerates easily on a consumer adjustable ramp. Applications that incorporated easy-to-tip devices like bottling lines can take great advantage from a slow ramp up in power permitting the conveyor belt to easily speed up instead a sudden jerk to full power.
  • Adjustable Running SpeedUnlike the conventional stop-and-go motor, the VFD enables optimizing a procedure, by making changes in a procedure. This allows initiation at decreased speed, and permit speed remote adjustment by programmable controller or procedure controller.
  • Limiting Torque Utilization of a VFD can prevent machinery from damage. Also preventing the process or product. A conveyor jam is the perfect example of it. If simply an AC motor connected, the motor will continously rotate until the motor’s overload equipment opens while a VFD can be set to limit the torque so that AC motor certainly not exceeds the limit.
  • Stopping ControlAlong with controlled acceleration, controlled stopping is also very important for reducing mechanical wear and tear — because of shocks to the procedure or product losss due to breakage.
